Tax Donation Info Donations of clothing, household items, automobiles and other goods to Goodwill are tax deductible to the extent permitted by law. When you deliver your donation to a store or attended donation center, please ask the donation clerk for a receipt of your items that you can keep for tax purposes. Federal law provides that clothing and household goods must be in "good used condition or better" for tax deductions. When you file your taxes, you will have to complete IRS Form 8283 to itemize your deductions for clothing and household item donations and attach it to your tax return. Per IRS publication 561, all not-for-profit organizations are prohibited from assigning values or estimates to donated items, so Goodwill always recommends that you consult a tax adviser first. In general, the amount you can deduct is based on the fair market value of the donated items. If you believe your donations are worth more than $500, the IRS requires you to submit an independent appraisal with your itemized tax return. Appraisals should be done before items are donated, and payment of the appraisal is the responsibility of the donor. Consult a local tax advisor who should be familiar with market values in your region and Review the following tax guides available from the IRS: Determining the Value of Donated Property Defines “fair market value” and helps donors and appraisers determine the value of property given to qualified organizations. It also explains what kind of information you must have to support the charitable contribution deduction you claim on your return. (Publication 561)
Donation Receipt/Tax Record Form Most donations to Goodwill Industries are tax deductible, but you must maintain a record of contributed items for your tax report. Before you bring your donation to one of our stores, you can pre fill out a Receipt/Tax Record form, then when you arrive one of our goodwill representatives can sign it. We only ask that you bring 2 copies with you so that we may keep one for our records.
The U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) requires donors to value their items. To help guide you, the following list provides price ranges for items commonly sold in Goodwill stores. Assume the following items are in good condition, and remember—prices are only estimated values.
